Ways to Give to Queen's
There are several ways to give – some are simple while others may require some planning.
- Cash Donation The simplest way to contribute is to use the gift form and reply envelope provided for you. You can pay by cheque or credit card and a tax receipt will be issued for the calendar year in which the gift was received. You can pledge your annual give over multiple years (up to five years).
- Donation of Publicly Traded Shares Recent changes to the tax legislation now offer vast tax benefits for supporters wishing to donate shares directly to Queen’s rather than selling them first and donating the cash proceeds. In the case where shares are donated directly to a registered charity, like Queen’s, the donor receives a charitable gift receipt for the full market value of the shares. No capital gains are reported due to this gift.
- Bequests and other Planned Giving Options In addition to a cash gift, you can make a lasting gift to benefit future generations by including Queen’s in your will. Your estate will receive a tax receipt for the bequest, which will reduce any taxes owing. For more information on giving through bequests, life insurance, annuities and other types of planned giving options, please contact the Queen’s Planned Giving Office at 1-800-267-7837.
- Gifts of Life Insurance When Queen’s is named owner and sole beneficiary of an insurance policy, the donor receives an official charitable receipt equal to the cash surrender value of the gifted policy. Receipts are also issued for subsequent premium payments made.
- Options for U.S. Residents U.S. Alumni and/or their family members can make donations directly to Queen’s using any of the options outlined above (cash, stock, planned gifts). The donations will qualify for an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax deduction. For electronic transfer of stock, your broker should contact our US Broker at Robert W. Baird & Co. David Epstein is the contact at 414-765-3679 (or 1-800-792-2473). Mr. Epstein needs to be aware that this is a gift for Queen's University, Acct. 6892-8261, and that the Digital Transfer Code is 547. Mr. Epstein will ensure that the donor’s name is included in the transaction so that we can identify the gift when it arrives.
- Matching Gift Option Many companies will match all funds donated to Queen’s by their employees. Please consider asking your employer if it is a matching gift company and double your gift value. Note that your gift may be matched if you work for, or have retired from, a matching gift company - please contact your personnel department for more details or visit Queen’s Matching Gifts webpage at http://www.matchinggift.com/canada/queens
